Another Soul Risks Life For Answers

Gene Chapman on Day 14 of Death Fast
Waiting for IRS to Cite What Law Makes Him Liable

Across from IRS regional office in downtown Austin, Texas, Gene Chapman sat quietly through Day 14 of a "death fast" that he began on April 15th.  He will fast until his death or until the Internal Revenue Service shows him the specific US law that makes him liable for the income tax.

Chapman, a soft-spoken professional with strong spiritual values, modeling his fast after Mahatma Gandhi, says he is fully prepared to give up his life to get answers to the hundreds of well researched, specific legal questions that have been repeatedly submitted to the government in Petitions for Redress of Grievances by this Foundation and many other individuals around the nation.  The specific matter of who the income tax is legally imposed upon remains a key part of that legal inquiry.

To date, NO government official will provide any official response to Chapman's simple question or to the series of over 500 "true or false" format questions from the Petition for Redress that directly challenge the legal jurisdiction of the IRS and the grossly unconstitutional enforcement and administrative operations of the IRS.

Chapman, follows We The People Chairman Bob Schulz who went on a similar hunger strike in July, 2001.   In that fast he was joined by businessman Roland Croteau.  During the three week fast, Schulz did secure a formal agreement with Department of Justice Assistant Attorney General Dan Bryant and former IRS Commissioner Rossotti to provide official answers to the questions in a public, recorded forum on Capitol Hill.

Unfortunately, DOJ and IRS later reneged on their agreement and have steadfastly refused to answer the questions since. Congress refuses to respond to the Petitions for Redress.

In March, 2003, Rose Lear undertook a four week hunger strike in a failed effort to force her Michigan congressman, Rep. Peter Hoekstra, to answer the questions.  In the end however, Hoekstra only provided Lear with a non-responsive "response" generally parroting IRS's "canned" public responses.  After it was clear that the government intended to let Lear die without real answers, Lear stopped her fast and returned to Michigan to battle another day.

Chapman, familiar with Lear's recent failed fast attempt, reiterated to Bob Schulz that he is "prepared to give his life for God" for this matter.  He will not stop his death fast until he gets answers

Although local Austin IRS officials have tried to ignore Chapman, his fast has been the topic of growing local news coverage.  In one television news interview with the local ABC affiliate in Austin, an IRS spokesman assured the viewers that the "Constitution gave Congress the power to impose the tax".  Since last week however, it appears that local IRS officials were now directing additional internal inquiries to IRS in Washington after apparently, being unable to cite any specific law that actually imposes a legal obligation to pay the tax

To support Chapman, WTP volunteers have established a "blog" site where day-to-day and even hourly events, pictures and short sound clips from Chapman are posted.  The "blog" site can be accessed by clicking here.

WTP encourages everyone to contact their local media and their congressional representatives and let them know of Gene Chapman.  Help them see what is so obvious to those who know the truth.

Gene Chapman's act is a true gift for this nation and her children.  His act is a chance for America to see what she has truly become as we have ignored our Constitution and its spiritual principles, and allowed our government to step well outside the boundaries of the limited powers set forth by the People.

It is a chance to force this nation's leaders to look in the mirror and reflect, once again, "Is this what has become of our nation?  Must a man die because our government refuses to answer a simple question about US tax law? Are we a nation bound by a written Constitution?"

We'd all like to believe it can't happen  -- not here - not at the world's source of democracy, justice and liberty.  But if Gene Chapman does die without answers, We The People better think long and hard about what that means, and more importantly, what we're going to do about it.
