More properly Yen-king, an ancient city, whose
ruins still appear some furlongs to the south-east of the
modern Pekin, which was built by Cublai Khan, (Gaubel, p.
146.) Pe-king and Nan-king are vague titles, the courts of
the north and of the south. The identity and change of
names perplex the most skilful readers of the Chinese
geography, (p. 177.)
